ReadMe file for Menegroth. February 8, 1998. Sent comments to Tim Baker at "dbaker@direct.ca". What is Menegroth? ------------------ Menegroth is a fully graphical, sound-enabled, user-friendly Macintosh version of Angband, worked on by my friend Aaron Funk and myself, Tim Baker. Menegroth is based on (I believe) Angband 2.7.9v5 sources. It actually started life much earlier as MacAngband version 2.5.x if I remember correctly. Aaron and I had worked on it for about five years, although nothing much has been done since the beginning of 1997. It has some rough edges (for example the help system was never really finished), but it is one enjoyable game! System Requirements ------------------- You need a Macintosh with System 7. I developed it on a Mac IIsi with a 40 MB hard drive and 3 MB of RAM (7 MB with virtual memory turned on) and System 7.1. Aaron, who acquired all the graphics (and picked most of the sounds!) played it on a Mac Centris 650 with System 7.5. I tried it briefly on his system after he upgraded to System 8; it seemed to work. Note that my system was really too slow, but the Centris ran it just fine. I'm not too sure about disk and memory requirements (I'm writing this on my Windows PC). Aim for about 4-5 MB of disk space and 6 MB of RAM. Never been tried on a PowerMac. Files ----- The files were BinHex'd after running them through Compact Pro. The "sounds-1", "sounds-2", and "sounds-3" files are all part of a single archive; you must un-BinHex them, then open up the first file in order to access the archive as a whole. These three files are required: menegroth-exe.cpt.hqx The executable. menegroth-icon.cpt.hqx All the icon files. menegroth-lib.cpt.hqx The "lib" directory. These three files contain sounds and are optional: menegroth-sounds-1.cpt.hqx Sounds part 1. menegroth-sounds-2.cpt.hqx Sounds part 2. menegroth-sounds-3.cpt.hqx Sounds part 3. Install ------- Never been done yet, but let's give it a go! Create a folder called "Menegroth". Unpack the "menegroth-exe" archive and put the application into the Menegroth folder. Then unpack the "menegroth-lib" archive; it contain's the "lib" folder which sould go into the Menegroth folder. Put everything from the "menegroth-icon" archive into the new "lib/files" folder. Your disk should look like this: Menegroth Folder lib apex bone data edit file help info save user xtra As explained above, the "menegroth-sounds-1/2/3" files make up a SINGLE archive. The archive contains a single file called "sounds.rsrc", which contains sounds and sound preferences. This file is completely optional. You may wish to try the game without this file to see if it will run on your system. (Like I said, Menegroth has never been introduced to a PowerMac, and might choke on System 8). Running ------- The first time you run the game, it creates a bunch of files in the lib/data folder. These include the usual "x_info.raw" files found in Angband, and also some other "raw" files containing compressed icon data (for faster loading). The point is this may take some time, but only needs to be done once. Menegroth also creates a file in the Preferences Folder (I hope :-) ). Final Word ---------- I hope I haven't left any files out. My Mac IIsi almost expired while I was compressing and transferring files to my PC, one floppy-full at a time. Can a computer have a stroke? I think mine did. If you go through the trouble of downloading and installing, you have my best wishes. If it works, you are going to be so happy! -- Tim Baker, February 1998
